Judge Marcantel is native of Lake Charles, Louisiana. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from the University of Arkansas in 1984 and a Juris Doctorate degree from the L.S.U. Paul M. Hebert Law Center in 1990. He became a member of the Louisiana Bar in 1990 and a member of the Arkansas Bar in 1991 (currently inactive). 

Judge Marcantel has been married to Carol Henley Marcantel since 1985. He and Carol have two daughters, Diana M. Moore and Laura E. Marcantel. Diana is a 2020 graduate of the Southern University Law Center and is currently a member of both the Louisiana and Georgia Bars. Laura is a 2020 graduate of the L.S.U. Paul M. Hebert Law Center and is a member of the Louisiana Bar. 

Judge Marcantel served as an assistant district attorney in the 19th Judicial District from 1992-1996, he maintained a private litigation practice from 1996 to 2021, served as a member of the East Baton Rouge Public Defender's Office from 2018 to 2021, and was elected to the City Court Bench in 2021. Judge Marcantel assumed to bench at the 19th JDC on February 26, 2025.
